That which does not kill you...

Earl gets 19.46 miles per gallon.

Ouch.

I discovered this fact when Opie Capone and I took a road trip down south on Wednesday to pick up our wee grandmother from our parent's house where she'd been spending a few days.

She didn't used to be a wee grandmother. She used to be a damn good pool hustler, a crack shot with the .22 pistol and the world's best all-around southern cooking goddess. But now she is 84 and my grandfather has been dead for several years and she has become wee.

And that's ok.

On the way down I got really hungry and told Opie/Jonboy that we were stopping in Brownfield. I didn't make that up - Brownfield is the town's real name. I cannot think of any more aptly named place in the state, unless of course it is the real name of Fake Cow City. (If you're real curious about it, email me and I'll tell ya what it is.)

This is where we ate:

Oh, man, it was goooood. Its a bar-b-que joint right on the highway. If you ever go through there, stop and chow. When we rolled out the door and climbed back in the truck, Opie said "That was really good and it didn't even give me a headache."

"A headache? What are you talking about?"

"Don't you ever get a headache if you eat too much bar-b-que?"

"Uh, no."

After we picked up grandmother and headed back north toward home, I had to stop at the rest area just north of their town. I'd seen this sign on the way in:

It made me laugh.

Come on there are some other funny town names in your area. How about Muleshoe, or Dumas (song Ding Dong Daddy from Dumas) or how about Dimmitt ( my folks use to call it Dimmitt Dammitt).

Or how about the reason Plainview is named Plainview (where I was born). A cowboy had to release himself and let go beside of the road. A couple of ladies in a buggy said " Look at that right here in Plainview" I'm sure these quotes are old to you. I couldn't help myself. LOL

Somehow I get this feeling you take after your grandmother.

In the same part of Texas are Slide, Ropesville, Shallowater, and Earth. Then there's Canyon; somebody thought real hard about that one. But some of my favorite Texas town names are in central Texas: Wink, Dimebox, and Zephyr.

You make me want to take a trip to Brownfield and that is just so not right....

Don't forget about Littlefield, Levelland and Happy, or the school mascots ... just down the highway from Hereford (school mascot is Whitefaces) is the town of Whiteface (school mascot is Herefords).

And, by the way, barbecue is a vice. I tend to eat so much of it that it gives me a headache.

And I was born in Post. Yes, named for the same man responsible for Post Toasties cereal.

I have a fantasy that this reminded me of. I want to take a few weeks, or months and ride all over the south eating BBQ in towns with funny names and I want to make a documentary about it. Has that already been done? I want BBQ now. There is no good BBQ here unless I make it myself and its a pain. I want peach cobbler too and real strawberry shortcake that is like a biscuit and not yellow cake.
