For what shall it proffitt a man...
I thought this was a terribly interesting stone. I've seen crosses, cresents and chrysanthemums. Never a peace symbol. I've got a theory on this. What do you think?
I love your pics and speculations and I too would like to hear his story :)
CND supporter maybe - It was big in the UK in the early 80s when it seemed the world was stockpiling Weapons of mass distruction - they probably still are but we don't talk about it anymore it seems.
It is not widely known that Mr. Proffitt was once a member of the SS and a secet spiritual advisor to Hitler prior to his life in America.
His defection to the west came just after WWII, when he moved to a small west Texas town and changed his Germanic surname of "Pfeiffer" to "Proffitt" (obviously to hide his past, but also because he was repulsed by the chance connection to a capitalistic American movie star).
Upon news of his death, old comrades living in anonymity in the US pooled their pennies to have a proper SS symbol carved on his headstone, knowing that the stupid Americans would just think ol' Pfeiffer/Proffitt was a groupie for Abbie Hoffman.
If you look carefully, on the back of the headstone in a very tiny carving is this phrase:

I hope she gets one soon!
He's an ex-hippy?

Yep, ex-hippie gets my vote too...but Spooky probably has a more interesting theory! We just have to wait for her to spill the beans...
Maybe he is a Proffitt of Peace..
Oh relatively speaking is a hoot!
yeah, I'm thinking ex-hippie/conscientious objector type of thing. I'd love to know the story on this guy.
Perhaps even a Viet Nam Vet? I have several friends who went to Viet Nam who came home pacifists.

Hey! That's my neighbors' last name! What a coinkydink. No theory on the peace symbol, though...hmm...
Hey, MK - Its also "realitively speaking's" last name too, unless I miss my guess! Maybe she's secretely your neighbor...?
Fundamentalist will assure you that a peace sign is a sure marker of sneaking paganism. Maybe James D was head of the local coven?
Ha ha ha! The whole 'broken cross in a circle' thing, right? Geeze!
There's something in there about proffitt and loss -- sorry :-)
Peace,
Milton
"Why did I pick that purple nail polish?"
Proffitt of peace.
That made me laugh so hard that chocolate milk came out my nose.
Hoo-wee!
It's not a peace sign - it's pidgeon tracks!!!

"Liegen Sie in Frieden, Kamerad."
Proof positive of this explanation.
Once a hippy, always a hippy...
