Friday Cemetery Blogging

Last Friday Jackson and I took a road trip. We headed down south via some country backroads. One of the roads was being demolished and rebuilt, so we had to make a detour. On our detour we came to this intersection:

The roads meet (1 dirt road and two paved ones) at this field:

This little cemetery is way, way, way out in the middle of nowhere. This photo is covers pretty much the entire site. There is nothing for miles in any direction, except for these few stones.

Most of the stones were handmade and most of the graves dated from the 1930's. (Anchient history in this part of the country!)

There are a few newer graves and a few professional headstones. There are also some new headstones that are marking graves with previously handmade stones. Some of the handmade stones show evidence that someone has redone the lettering to make it legible again. The cemetery itself is recently mowed and seems to be taken care of.

This is marks a grave of one of the slightly more recent burials:

Do you think she got an answer when she called?

I love that she was Called Back home.

Awesome.

Now I have to decide between that and "She Never Paid Retail".

Here I was, thinking how she was called home, what a neat sentiment, short and to the point...and then your wise-crack cracked me up.

Wait --- "Slightly more recent burials"? She was buried in 1944. Do you mean hers was one of the newest graves out there? 1944?

Revmom - you made me spew coke on the monitor! (And by "coke" of course I mean Diet Dr. Pepper.)

Annie - Yes, hers is one of the newest. Here's what I think the situation is: There was one new gravestone that does not yet have a date of death. The lady it is for would be in her 80's now. She has the same last name as two children who were also buried there in the 40's. Her gravesite is right next to theirs. I think this woman has decided to be buried here next to her children and I'm guessing her family are the people who are doing the recent caretaking for the cememtery. Which is kind of cool.

I'm trying to imagine a place that's so lonely and flat. Lonely places where I live are either full of trees or bodies of water. How cool it must be in Texas.

There are lots of tiny cemetaries around here that seem to be in people's yards, but in reality are squeezed between privately owned properies. Maybe this summer I'll do a Spookyrach Tribute tour and take some pictures. As of now, everything is buried in snow.

I love it. *Called Back* Like finally you were missed so much that God just had to have you.

And Patti...I love that idea. Ask Rach about the time we found the little tomb stones smak dab between two highways.

Coke=cherry lime diet coke....never Pepsi

Oh, dear. MY headstone will say, "NEVER called back! (dadgummit!)"

I just hate to return phone calls. Just HATE it. And goodie, goodie, now I have voice mail in my new office. A whole 'nother set of calls to return.

My New Year's resolution is going to have to be to return all calls immediately, as I would want others to return all calls unto ME!

Ptooi!!!

OH and hey, I'm the 15,000 visitor to this site. Yay!!!

(Do I win a doorprize or something?)

Yeah, probably a free one-year subscription or something.

Hee hee!

So, Rachel, are you like a cemetary magnet or something? I mean, you take a detour and, voilá, there's a tiny cemetary waiting for you to play detective. I'm sort of a needs-to-be-filed papers magnet myself.
