Friday Cemetery Blogging
It's still Friday for another half hour or so.
That gives me just enough time to post a picture I took in Dallas.

Let me know how this looks on your browser. I'm having trouble - maybe? - with pictures appearing darker on the blog than they do otherwise. I know this is pretty subjective, but does it appear too dark to you? It's supposed to look gloomy, but not totally midnighted!
I had a great time in Dallas - especially on a couple of fabulous Blogger Blind Dates that I will have to tell you about later. But now, I'm goin' to bed!

Friday Cemetery Blogging
Well.
I started this last night, but after a half hour of staring at the screen and not typing, I quit and went to bed.
By the light of day, things still look the same.
Not to say that things are bad. Not at all. This has just been a week of interruptions and busy-ness. I've had too much to do and too little accomplished. Nothing is more frustrating than starting projects and being unable to get them done because new little projects are poking their nasty little pointed noses into your bidness.
Here's hoping next week is more productive!

Friday Cemetery Blogging
I am pissed.
In the American pretty-damn-mad sort of a way, as opposed to the British drunk-on-yer-arse sort of a way.
Jenstar, of My Life in the Corner fame, threw down a gauntlet earlier today and sent me a cemetery picture challenge. I picked up the gauntlet and was so totally prepared to smack it down because I so totally OWN that challenge! I had the perfect photo. Per-freakin'-erfect.
But I can't find it! (Insert Lucille Ball-esque whine here.)
I know it's here somewhere. Eventually I'll find it. But this is really the last straw. I have, have, have to do something about my abysmal photo organization. Jackson, the in-house nerd, suggests a passport drive as a possible solution. Anybody have an other suggestions?
Until I can find my missing photo, you'll have to make do with this one. I took it Thursday morning while wandering around town in the rain, on the wrong side of the tracks, and sometimes on the tracks themselves.

Misty Weekend
I had the best spooky weekend! Rose and John were headed to visit Rose's aunt in Gun Barrel City. (Don't you just love that name?) I hitched a ride with them and spent the weekend skulking around cemeteries in Athens with C.Wright.
We even found, among other treasures, a cemetery named after George Valentine Petty. Isn't that a great name?
I love names. I keep a list of probationer names. They are really incredibly funny, but unfortunately, I can't share any of them with you. Cemetery names are fair game though. If - when - I write a book, my characters will all be named for people I've tramped on in grave yards. Names like Minnie Moon, for example.
While we were there, the weather was the most creepishly foggy and misty and downright rainy. My favorite! Unfortunately, grey granite monuments silhouetted against a grey granite sky makes for some boring photos. However, anything you snap with you camera aimed at the ground takes a wonderfully subdued and eerie feel. Maybe I can post some good shots later this week.
On the way home, we all breathed a sigh of resignation as we climbed back up on the dry, dusty caprock. As John said, "Every time I go somewhere else, it gets harder and harder to come back home." We were welcomed with two days worth of sandstorms.

Some days I really don't know why the hell we bother to live here.
Although, there's always the sunset...

Eight Random Things and a Cemetery Photo
Jackson and Katie are helping me with this list of 8 Random Things. Thanks to reverendmother for the tag. They have come up with some really random stuff, but after three (or is it 4?) years of doing this, I've covered most of the random stuff. Here's what we got:
1. I'm a redhead. Have I told you that before? I can't remember. And it's natural.
2. I can use power tools. And I have all my original digits. (I think Jackson married me for my drill.)
3. I have read only the first Harry Potter book. I liked it. But I haven't read any of the others. This drives Jackson, a confirmed Harry Potter addict, nuts. I've also never read the DaVinci Code. I did read Dan Brown's Angels and Demons. I liked it. But I never read the DaVinci Code. (Mom said Angels and Demons was better than the DaVinci Code, anyway.)
4. I can't dance. (Jackson and Katie both suggested I note that I can't sing, either. Ingrates!)
5. I am a morning person. In the extreme. However, I am a quiet, leave-me-alone-and-let-me-read-or-write-in-peace morning person.
6. I like to garden, but I am a lazy gardener. Thus, I refuse to plant annuals. Perennials only, please. And I seldom weed.
7. I love and adore roadhouse blues.
8. I have three graduate hours towards a Master's Degree. I really enjoyed the class, but turns out they expect you to work outside of class - do term papers and projects and the like. As if!
So, that's it. Have a great weekend!

Friday Cemetery Blogging
My photo software and I are not seeing eye to eye today, so that's why you only get this picture of a really cool monument. I have a thing for the Gothic arch/window shape, which forms the main part of stone. Add in the symmetrical urns and the bored woman and you have an almost perfect tombstone.
I think maybe Mr. Manziel and I would have gotten along really well. If nothing else, we could have agreed on the decor.
P.S. I fixed this so you can leave comments now. Dunno why you couldn't before.

Friday Cemetery Blogging
"If I've swept this place once, I've swept it a thousand times! If those rotten zombies don't stop traipsing through here, leaving their slime everywhere, heads are gonna roll!"
Have y'all noticed how eternally bored the angels are in cemeteries? You never see a happy one. I guess that would be considered bad form.
They remind me of the poor highway patrolman who gets stuck working in the driver's license office for the entirety of his career. Some of 'em, both the angels and the driver testers, are downright surly.

Friday Cemetery Blogging
This stone gives me the creeps. Bizarre Freudian creeps.

It makes me think this poor woman had a pale, unemployed, unhappy son living in her basement.
The next one, however, makes me think this guy was a ton of fun. Don't you wish you'd known this poor nut who couldn't make up his mind which nickname to use?

He probably died with his boots on.

Friday Cemetery Blogging
In honor of Presbyterian Gal's quest for the strange this week, I'm posting a strange stone for you. This is the side that faces the cemetery road:
At first glance, it appears to say "Young". But it really starts with a backwards J, followed by y, o, u, backwards n and g. The back side is equally enigmatic:

No names, just Father, Mother, and the date they died. In 1926. Any ideas?
